I had the pleasure of joining Helga Svendsen’s podcast to dive into one of my favorite topics: Influence with Impact.
In the boardroom (or anywhere, really), influence isn’t just about making noise—it’s about understanding who’s in the room, what matters to them, and why. As I like to say, influence is just good communication on steroids!
In our chat we covered the subtle yet powerful art of connecting with decision-makers and peers alike—because sometimes, influence has to happen without the power of a title. It’s all about those informal, meaningful connections that really move the needle.
Let’s talk about team communication.
It’s not enough THAT we talk to each other, it’s also HOW we talk to each other that counts. And to get better at that we need to reflect, review and refine the process of our discussions, not just the content of them.
It’s like trying to get better at piano by playing for 10,000 hours without review or adjustment. The 10,000 hours of playing bad piano won’t make you an expert, but 10,000 hours that is constantly reviewed, refine and adjusted, definitely will.
Ed Frauenheim's insights about masculinity during our Spotlighting Success Webinar, really resonated with the work I do in gender equality. Women AND men are all limited by the stereotypes that dictate our cultural norms in society. Women as ‘nice’ and emotional care takers and home makers and men as ‘strong’ and stoic bread winners and financial providers.

That’s what happens. 🌟 And not just because we all come from different backgrounds, but because our lenses into inclusion in the workplace are also so diverse. From Simon Dewar, Group CEO of BSI Digital Learning, to Kala Philips, CEO of BSI Learning institute and Nola Turner-Jensen, a Senior Aboriginal Research Fellow at Melbourne Uni to myself, Author of the Gender Penalty and When men lead women. The clip is my take on the importance of DEI from an interpersonal perspective… and it’s not just DEI as it stands today; it’s the outcome or goal of DEI - 𝐛𝐞𝐥𝐨𝐧𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐠. Diversity without understanding is just difference. It’s disruptive. But diversity with understanding is transformative. It creates belonging.
Traditional notions of leadership often exclude diverse voices and perspectives, perpetuating inequality and limiting progress. By expanding our definition of good leadership, we create space for a multitude of talents and experiences to flourish, driving innovation and fostering a more equitable society.
