What a tiktokker taught me about being succinct - she is masterful!

Get to the point! They say.

Be succinct! They say.

Stop waffling! They say.

And you try. You really do. But it’s hard to squeeze all your ideas and information into salient sound bites.

And so I want to share the story of Laura Ramoso… just to make you feel better.

Laura is not a professional in the corporate landscape, like you and I, but she is a professional none-the-less. She is a TikTokker. A Canadian based sketch comic, with more than 700,000 followers on TikTok and Instagram. She makes short sketch videos, mostly impersonating her parents - a German mother and an Italian father. She is brilliant.

You could say her job is to make short videos that make people laugh, but I contend that her real job is to be succinct.

In a podcast interview on ‘Q with Tom Power’ she talks about her creative process and I was shocked to hear it…(and a little bit validated I have to admit!). She produces 1 minute videos. They are short, sharp and punchy, but mostly, they are fun, funny and full of heart.

How long do you think it takes her to produce a 1 minute video for TikTok?

1 hr?

2...?

1 day?

It takes her 30 minutes of recording footage (which has been pre-scripted, plus some ad libbing takes), then at least 20-30 HOURS of editing. She is pruning away the fluff, finding the core, and keeping it tight. And it takes WORK.

So, next time you feel bad about not being able to just ‘get to the point’, take a deep breath and remember these lessons from Laura:

  • Being succinct takes work

  • The skills can be learned

  • The effort is worth the impact

You’ve got this!
